The Specializing Master in Navigation and Related Applications is part of the training offer of Politecnico di Torino and it is organized jointly with Istituto Superiore “Mario Boella”. It is supported by the Istituto Nazionale per la Ricerca Metrologica (INRIM) and by the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UN-OOSA).

The Master Program is addressed to graduate students with a M.Sc. Degree in Engineering. It is open to international students, and it is taught in English.

The e-Knot project is funded by the European GNSS Agency under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 641529. The scope of the project is to strengthen the interaction between the areas of education-research-industry in Europe in order to consolidate a strong EGNSS knowledge triangle. The activities aim at building a solid network for the creation of a critical mass involving the relevant actors in the three areas with the final objective of supporting the economy development

Politecnico di Torino/ISMB Experts Seminar

Natural and Artificial Threats to GNSS

 May 7-9, 2018 - Politecnico di Torino

Final program

In the framework of the cooperation with the United Nation - Office for Outer Space Affairs, which supports the specializing Master in Navigation and Related Applications of Politecnico di Torino and Istituto Superiore Mario Boella through a long-term fellowship agreement, this Experts Seminar will focus on a hot research topic for the improvement of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) performance.

A pool of highly qualified speakers from all around the world will provide the latest updates on the recent advancements and the future challenges to face in order to enable new applications of positioning and navigation thanks to sub-centimeter accuracy, robustness to disturbances, and improved reliability.

Specific attention is given to PhD students and young researchers, who will be the people in the coming years to design new GNSS-based technologies and services. Throughout the seminar, they will have the possibility to discuss benchmark and get advice about their own research work by meeting some of the best non‐European and European researchers, maximizing the cross-fertilization of the different experiences and interfacing with relevant industrial actors. This initiative is supported by the e-Knot project funded by the European Commission in the H2020 program.

Scope of the seminar

This seminar addresses the use of GNSS for various applications that can provide sustainable social and economic benefits. However, reliable positioning and navigation is becoming imperative in many applications for public services, consumer products, and safety-critical purposes. Though providing accurate and global position, velocity and time, GNSS technology is highly vulnerable to a range of threats. GNSS is particularly prone to unintended and malicious Radio Frequency Interference (RFI). Furthermore, GNSS threats include intentional attacks with the objective of disrupting the target receiver. Recalling that GNSS bandwidths are protected, the malicious transmission of counterfeit GNSS-like signals, usually known as spoofing, may become quite dangerous also for civil use of GNSS.

The effect of natural sources of interference is well known since the early years of GNSS. However, the high accuracy and reliability required by some challenging GNSS applications makes natural interference one of the main limiting factors to performance improvements. When considering the propagation of the signal in the atmosphere, the effect of the ionosphere is still one of the main causes of disturbances, considering also the irregularities of the electron concentration causing scintillations.

The seminar, through a set of distinguished lectures and technical sessions, will address the latest challenging in modeling the natural and artificial phenomena, as well as the latest solution proposed as countermeasures. The program dedicates one session to relevant works of students and young researchers and one session to companies' initiatives in this field.

During the session dedicated to students, Ph.D. students and young researchers will have the opportunity to meet GNSS international experts, present and discuss their research works.

The seminar will cover aspects related to interference monitoring to GNSS signals and applications. For the technical and students sessions, authors are invited to submit a short abstract dealing with recent and original work in the following areas:

  • Interference detection and mitigation
  • GNSS spectrum protection and new signal formats
  • Security-critical applications based on GNSS
  • Space weather analysis and ionosphere monitoring
  • Navigation in harsh environment and multipath mitigation
  • Robust GNSS receiver architectures

Who should attend

The participation to the workshop is free of charge. Person willing to attend are required to register HERE

***** REGISTRATION IS NOW CLOSED *****

If you are interested in attending the seminar, contact expseminar@eknotproject.eu

Authors willing to contribute to the technical sessions on one of the topics or present their work during the student session should fill out the abstract in the registration form before March 20, 2018.

Contribution by students and young researchers are particularly welcome.

Notifications of abstracts acceptance will be sent via e-mail to the corresponding author by March 30, 2018.

A limited number of grants are available to support the attendance of eligible participants, with priority given to participants from developing countries. Financial support will only cover travel costs, and will NOT include costs such as accommodation, travelling allowance for food/beverage, etc. The co-sponsors of the seminar will jointly select participants on a competitive basis.
